Description
WHAT IS A GLP-1?
A GLP-1 is an injectable glucagon-like peptide-1 agonist that is administered once weekly to help with long-term weight management. It works by effectively reducing appetite, increasing portion control management which include reducing your food cravings, especially sugars. This all helps control blood sugar levels which can help lose body fat and help reduce overall weight (and keep it off.) GLP-1’s should be used with a reduced calorie meal plan and increased physical activity. When combined with proper diet and exercise GLP-1’s also supports improved heart health and healthy blood pressure.
GLP-1’s should not be used with other GLP-1-containing products or other GLP-1 receptor agonist medicines.
WHY ARE GLP-1’S PRESCRIBED?
WEIGHT LOSS AND A1C CONTROL
GLP-1 injections are used along with a diet and exercise program to control blood sugar levels in adults with type 2 diabetes (condition in which the body does not use insulin normally and therefore cannot control the amount of sugar in the blood) when other medications did not control the sugar levels well enough. GLP-1 injections are also used to reduce the risk of a stroke, heart attack, or death in adults who have type 2 diabetes along with heart and blood vessel disease. It is not used to treat type 1 diabetes (condition in which the body does not produce insulin and therefore cannot control the amount of sugar in the blood) or diabetic ketoacidosis (a serious condition that may develop if high blood sugar is not treated). GLP-1 injections are not used instead of insulin to treat people with diabetes who need insulin. GLP-1 injections are used along with an individualized low-calorie, low-fat diet and exercise program to help with weight loss in overweight adults who may also have high blood pressure, diabetes, or high cholesterol. GLP-1 injections are in a class of medications called incretin mimetics. It works by helping the pancreas to release the right amount of insulin when blood sugar levels are high. Insulin helps move sugar from the blood into other body tissues where it is used for energy. GLP-1 injections also work by slowing the movement of food through the stomach and may decrease appetite and cause weight loss.
HOW ARE GLP-1 INJECTIONS TAKEN?
Generally, a starting dose of GLP-1 injections is .25mg.
GLP-1’s are taken once a week.
Take your GLP-1 injections on the same day every week.
GLP-1’s can be taken with or without food.
THE RESULTS SPEAK FOR THEMSELVES
- In large randomized control trials, patients receiving GLP-1, 2.4 mg, lost a mean of 6% of their weight by week 12 and 12% of their weight by week 28.1
- Overall, the researchers found, participants with normal blood glucose or prediabetes who took GLP-1’s for 68 weeks saw their risk for developing type 2 diabetes over 10 years drop from 18.2% to 7.1% — a dramatic risk reduction of 61%.
