Will I regain the weight if I stop taking semaglutide?

Medications like semaglutide have been a game changer for many people on their weight loss journey. After all, adults taking Wegovy (semaglutide) during clinical trials lost nearly 15% of their initial body weight. Similar results were seen in adolescents. But do you need to take semaglutide forever? And what happens if you stop taking it? Semaglutide is a medication that’s intended to be taken long term. As long as you’re taking the medication, weight loss is typically sustained. But if you stop taking it, it’s possible to gain some (or all) of the weight back.

Your appetite and body weight are influenced by certain hormones. And when you lose weight, these hormones change. This results in your body adapting to fewer calories being consumed.

What’s unique about semaglutide is that it’s thought to directly affect some of these hormones. Your appetite is reduced and you feel full for longer as a result. If you continue taking the medication, weight loss is typically sustained over time. But if you stop treatment, your appetite (and therefore the weight) can return.

Keep in mind that semaglutide should be paired with lifestyle changes, including a healthy diet and exercise. Getting enough sleep is important, too. These habits should be incorporated into your routine long term. If you do stop semaglutide, this may help manage potential weight gain.
